Birding In The Valley:

Many ardent birders travel far to see another bird to add to their life list, and lots of them come to Solvang to find the Yellow-billed Magpie. This large, crow-sized, black and white bird with a bright yellow bill and a raucous voice is found almost exclusively in California’s central and southern sections. The National Audubon Society California and the Central Coast Audubon Chapters have just sponsored a “Central Coast Birding Trail” and have produced a colorful brochure listing favorite birding locations for visitors in our area. Information and brochures can be obtained at the Conference and Visitors Bureau, call 1-(800) 468-6765.

For bicyclists, there are several easy loops from Solvang through the back country and past horse ranches and vineyards. For hiking and biking information, call the Conference and Visitors Bureau,

Visitors will learn that ostriches run faster than any animal on two legs - up to 45 mph; that they lay eggs weighing around 3-1/2 pounds (the equivalent of 25 chicken eggs); that males sit on the eggs at night and hens sit during the day. These Africa natives have long been prized for their unique feathers; in recent years their red meat has become popular as a low-fat alternative to beef.
